The urban center of Penang still goes by the British colonial name of Georgetown. In its midst stands the unmistakable KOMTAR, a dilapidated 65-story concrete monolith rising over a once-popular shopping center. I was convinced that there would have to be some kind of restaurant where we could get a cold beer at the top. When we finally located the elevator entrance, a friendly lady informed us that the restaurant and club had gone out of business, but for a small fee (about $1) we could go up anyway. So we wandered the abandoned dining room, sipping complimentary Chinese tea and trying to enjoy the panoramic view through the thick film of dirt on the windows. prev | next |
